We’re at the peak moment of the back to school shopping season and the online data that we’re seeing thus far indicates that the 2016 back to school season will be bigger than ever. According to Hitwise, a division of Connexity, visits to the Hitwise Retail 500, a collection of the top online shopping sites, were up 2.6% during the four weeks ending August 13, 2016 versus the same period a year ago. That equates to approximately 100 million more online shopping visits this back to school season so far.
With so much going on, I wanted to focus on identifying some of this year’s trending products to get an idea of what’s hot among the back to school set. I determined the hot products by looking at the increase in rank position of nearly 6,000 unique search variations tracked weekly in our Hitwise hot product list between the four weeks ending August 15, 2015 and the four weeks ending August 13, 2016. Of course, age plays a big role in determining what’s hot, so I further segmented our list into three groups using our new AudienceView platform: parents of elementary school-age children, parents of middle/high school-age children and college-bound students or their parents. The hot back to school products in each section below are among those that moved up the ranks the most year-over-year and also had above average interest among each audience. Products include everything from traditional school supplies to things students need for the home to help them succeed (or unwind).
