Cristiano Ronaldo accounted for one-fifth of World Cup player U.S. searches in the past week

Experian Hitwise reports that Ronaldo is top searched-for player in the United States, France, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand;
Portugal and Mexico players searched more than U.S. players

New York, N.Y., June 10, 2010 - Experian® Hitwise® announced today that U.S. searches on Portugal star soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo accounted for one-fifth of all World Cup player searches last week in the United States. Among a portfolio of all World Cup players, Ronaldo received 19.16 percent of all U.S. searches. Ronaldo also was the top searched-for player in France, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand markets and number four in the United Kingdom.

Brazil soccer star Ronaldinho received the second-highest percentage of searches, with 5.63 percent, followed by U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan, with 4.24 percent. Spanish-language players dominated the top 10 results, comprising eight of the top 10 spots. Mexico players accounted for four of the top 10 player searches. Wayne Rooney, who plays for England (the U.S. team's first opponent), received the 10th-highest percentage of searches.

Portugal and Mexico team players searched for the most
A look at the searches for all the players at a team level revealed that Portugal players were searched for the most last week, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. Searches for players on Mexico's team received the second-highest percentage in the United States, followed by the U.S. team. South Korea was next, followed by Argentina and England.

More search stats:
• FIFA.com received 50 percent of the traffic from searches on the term "world cup" last week in the United States.
• Yahoo! Sports - World Cup 2010 received 11 percent of traffic, followed by Wikipedia with 8 percent.
• Searches on the term "world cup" have increased 216 percent over the past two weeks in the United States.
• The number of terms with "world cup" increased 226 percent in the same time.
