Traffic surplus for Treasury as 2005 Budget released


London, 17th March 2005 - Hitwise, the world's leading online competitive intelligence service, today reports that the website of HM Treasury received a surplus of traffic in response to the release of the 2005 budget yesterday. With "budget 2005" one of the top three search terms driving traffic to www.hm-treasury.gov.uk, the UK public are obviously keen to view details of the current government's spending in the run-up to May's general election.

According to Hitwise daily data, HM Treasury leapt from #86 to #9 in the Hitwise central government category yesterday - a jump of 77 positions, which represents a nine-fold increase in traffic in the space of 24 hours. Market share figures for March 16th reveal that the Treasury website currently claims more than 1.6% of traffic to the central government sector, ranking it ahead of other prominent government sites, including the NHS (www.nhs.uk) and OFSTED (www.ofsted.gov.uk).

More than 30% of upstream traffic to HM Treasury came from Google UK, while Inland Revenue is also referring almost 6% of visitors to the Treasury site. Inland Revenue (www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk) also increased its market share by almost 27% yesterday, with UK taxpayers flocking to the site to see how the tax changes of the 2005 budget will affect them.
