Public Transport Websites Popular Amid Fuel Rises

As Australian families feel the pinch of rising fuel prices, motorists are looking online for alternative means of transport. Hitwise, the world's leading online competitive intelligence service, reports an increase of 18% in the number of visits to public transport websites in September 2005 compared to the same time last year. These include private operator and government websites that offer timetable and route information for bus, rail and ferry services.

Transport Infoline (
www.131500.com.au) was the most visited website in this category, increasing its traffic by 13.9% between August 20 and September 17, 2005. Transport Infoline provides updates on service changes and an online travel planner for combined transport modes, for example a bus and train trip.

Price conscious surfers visited FuelWatch (www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au) and Motor Mouth (www.motormouth.com.au) in droves to compare the best fuel price by area. Motor Mouth also offers daily fuel price email alerts. FuelWatch and Motor Mouth ranked 8th and 18th respectively in the Hitwise Travel - Transport category, for the week ending September 17, 2005.

Search terms on 'petrol' have increased substantially, with growth of 502% between July 2 and September 17, 2005. Similarly, 'fuel' searches increased by 55% over the same time period.

Visits to Business & Finance - Property websites have interestingly risen by 8% between August 20 and September 17, suggesting that users are hunting for properties closer to central business districts and with easy access to public transport, especially as fuel prices could rise further.

The Top 20 searches for Travel - Transport included 'transperth', 'cityrail', 'metlink', 'connex' and 'queensland transport', for the 12 weeks period ending September 17, 2005.

Industry Search Term Report for Computers & Internet - Software

The following report lists the most popular terms typed into a search engine over the 12 weeks period ending 17/09/2005 that resulted in traffic to websites classified by Hitwise within the 'Computers & Internet - Software' industry. For example, the most popular search term was 'google earth' representing 2.84% of all search terms that delivered users to websites classified by Hitwise in the 'Computers & Internet - Software' industry.

A new promotion launched by Pepsi has seen the soft drink manufacturer improve its ranking considerably by jumping 8,680 ranks over a period of two weeks. In the hotly contested 'Food & Beverage - Brands & Manufacturers' category this translates to a Top 20 position, a jump from 71st to 17th. Associated websites such as Pepsi Max (www.pepsimax.com.au) are providing the website with 35% of its upstream traffic for the week ending September 17 while recently launched competition websites such as Heaps Rich (www.heapsrich.com.au) are taking 11.93% of the popular websites downstream traffic.

Related properties such as the quiz amusement websites 24 in 24 (www.24in24.com.au) and I never (www.i-never.com.au) have also performed strongly appearing in the 'Food & Beverage - Brands & Manufacturers' Top 10, with rankings of 5th and 7th respectively snaring a collective category share of 7.95%.

A popular television talk show website partnered with a leading bank website to give viewers the chance to win $1 Million dollars. To enter, viewers were directed via offline and online advertising, to a promotional website and asked to register within 24 hours.

In 24 hours, the promotional website jumped a massive 67 positions to become the 2nd most popular television program website in the Hitwise Television category - marking an increase of 775% in market share of visits.

With the Hitwise daily reporting tool, the television producers were able to instantly see the effects that both online and offline advertising had on traffic to their website, in relation to their competitors. In addition, the banking institution was able to see that through their affiliation with the promotion, they had achieved significant brand awareness by sponsoring this activity. Their competitors from all industries, could also benchmark the effects that the promotion had on the show's popularity, and subsequently, the website's popularity, the very next day!
