Twitter Maintains Strong Growth in Visits in Australia
According to Hitwise Australia, visits to Twitter were at an all time high, week ending 17 January 2009. Twitter has maintained its phenomenal yearly growth rate, increasing year-on-year in web visits by 535.7% (week ending 17 January 2009 compared to the same week last year).

Twitter's recent growth is due to resurgence in referrals from Facebook, which is also maintaining a strong following amongst Australian Internet users. The linked growth highlights the continued rise in the use of the Internet as a networking tool in social and business contexts versus the consumption of information.

Australian professionals returning to the workplace after the Christmas break could have contributed to the increased visits to Twitter in January. Twitter is an effective industry networking and knowledge sharing tool.

Search Marketing Feature
Using Google Analytics for Advanced Segmentation
Google Analytics is a free analytical package that marketers can use to measure traffic, referrals, website performance, usability and hundreds of other factors that have an impact on the bottom line.

Depending on the structure of your URLs you can easily set up Google Analytics to split your website into 'segments'.

A scenario where this could be useful:

Jane runs a large content based technology website and the main revenue source is banner advertising. She has 3 sections:

Apple (http://www.example.com.au/apple)
Windows (http://www.example.com.au/windows)
Linux (http://www.example.com.au/linux)

Jane currently has Google Analytics tracking all traffic and currently runs numerous reports to split out how many page impressions each section receives to help the sales team promote to advertisers.

In an analytics account you have the option to add a new profile:

  • Simply click 'add a profile for an existing domain' and select the relevant domain.
  • Once created on the dashboard, click 'edit' and go to 'filters applied to profile' and click on 'add filter'.
  • Then name your filter and choose the type 'include only traffic to a subdirectory'.

For example, Jane would set up 3 new profiles filtering:

^/apple/
^/windows/
^/linux/

This will now allow Jane to see individual data for each section and provide useful insights on how her visitors behave.
