Spotlight on the Environmental
Protection Department
The Environmental Protection Department (www.epd-asg.gov.hk)
website provides instant updates and past data of air pollution levels in
various areas of Hong Kong.
The Air Pollution Index (API) and
forecast system is a simple way of describing air pollution levels to
provide timely information to the public. Its aim is to advise people
before the onset of high air pollution levels, and to enhance awareness of
air pollution to the community. It helps the general public, especially
susceptible groups such as those with heart or respiratory illness, to
consider taking precautionary measures when necessary.
Daily
reporting started in June 1995 by the Environmental Protection Department
(EPD). In Hong Kong the API converts air pollution data from several types
of pollutants into a value ranging from 0 to 500.
