Blogging continues to boom in Hong Kong

The popularity of online blogging and social networking websites continues to boom in Hong Kong, with Hitwise reporting significant boosts in traffic to major blogging sites over the last few weeks.

Xanga (
www.xanga.com), the most popular blogging site in Hong Kong, has become the #2 website in Hong Kong for the first time this month. The site jumped from #3 during the week ending July 22 to #2 for the week ending August 12. Xanga now ranks just behind Hong Kong's most popular website, Yahoo! Hong Kong (hk.yahoo.com), the territory's consistent favourite site with over 7% market share out of all sites monitored by Hitwise Hong Kong.

Yahoo!'s blogging site, Yahoo! Hong Kong BLOG (hk.blogs.yahoo.com) has also experienced a phenomenal increase in traffic this month. From the week ending July 15 to the week ending August 12, the site's traffic has surged by almost 50%. Market share for Yahoo! Hong Kong BLOG in the Hitwise Lifestyle - Blogs & Personal Websites category for the week ending July 15 was 5.7%, which jumped to 8.44% for the week ending August 12. The Yahoo! site ranks at #2 in the Blogs category, just behind Xanga.

Overall, traffic to the Blogs sector in Hong Kong has increased by over 50%, based on year-on-year monthly data from July 2005 to July 2006. Blog websites now claim almost 4.42% of all traffic to websites from Hong Kong Internet users, compared to 2.93% for July last year.

One of the fastest-moving sites in the Hitwise Hong Kong rankings this month is Hong Kong Food Expo (www.hkfoodexpo.com). It celebrated the 17th anniversary this year, with a total of 336 exhibitors from 20 different countries and regions. The food expo was held from August 17 to August 21 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Apart from the exhibition, cooking demonstrations, health talks and games were held on stage.

The Hong Kong Food Expo website moved up 4,254 places to rank 864 in all categories; the site recorded a rise of nearly 800% market share between the week ending August 12 and August 19, 2006 for the Food and Beverage category, increasing from 0.45% to 3.74% over the same period.

The top three websites visited before www.hkfoodexpo.com for the week ending August 19, 2006 were Yahoo! Hong Kong Search (13.80%), Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (9.74%) and Hong Kong Trade Development Council (5.25%). The average visit time to the Hong Kong Food Expo website was 2 minutes 32 seconds.
