| Multimedia Websites Gain Popularity in Hong Kong |
Hong Kong Internet users have continued to shift their focus to online multimedia sharing websites over the past six months. The best example of this has been the increasing popularity of the video sharing community YouTube (www.youtube.com). Hitwise Hong Kong reports that since March 2006, the website has more then doubled its market share, skyrocketing from 0.30% to 1.7% amongst all websites visited by Hong Kong users. That equates to an increase of 31 positions in rankings, making YouTube the 6th most popular website in Hong Kong.
According to their website (www.youtube.com), "…YouTube is a consumer media company for people to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience". Users can upload their videos, as well as search by keyword, and save their favourites. Other similar websites include Google Video (video.google.com) and Yahoo! Video (video.yahoo.com).
Hitwise Hong Kong data indicate that the online multimedia industry as a whole has reflected this growth. Based on monthly data from March 2006 until August 2006, the Multimedia industry has also more than doubled its market share, climbing from 1.6% to 3.63%.
