Gold Medal Fight for Olympics Glory Online
Hitwise reports that the websites Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events in Hong Kong (www.equestrian2008.org) and Yahoo! Hong Kong 2008 (hk.2008.yahoo.com) both forced the official Olympics website Beijing 2008 (www.beijing2008.cn) into 3rd position during the week ending 02/08/2008. The initial excitement about staging the Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong however, has been overtaken by general interest in the Beijing Olympic Games.

Traffic to the Hitwise Sports - Olympics industry increased dramatically since the week of the opening ceremony (week ending 09/08/2008), recording a traffic increase of 2491% compared to 02/08/2008. Halfway into the Games, the fight was on in earnest, with the official website Beijing 2008 ranking as the most popular destination; but having since been overtaken by the Sina - 2008 Olympics mini-site (2008.sina.com.cn). Yahoo! Hong Kong 2008 was also under siege, with visits to QQ 2008 surging following the Olympic opening ceremony to hold 2.71% of market share within the Sports industry as of 13/08/2008.

A comparison of the six markets measured by Hitwise shows Hong Kong coming a close second to New Zealand in consumption of web-based Olympics content, while the UK looked to be trailing far behind.
