Surge in visits to People’s Action Party website as General Election looms
With speculation that the 2006 Singapore General Election may be called as early as May, Singaporeans have been scrutinizing the website of the reigning People's Action Party in ever-increasing numbers.
The Party's official website, www.pap.org.sg, has increased its traffic in All Categories by almost 700% since the beginning of the year, experiencing a jump in market share in the Hitwise Politics category from 1.17% for the week ending 7th January to 7.94% for the week ending April 8.
The website belonging to youthful members of PAP, Young PAP (www.youngpap.org.sg), has also experienced a surge in visits in recent weeks - its traffic has increased almost five-fold in the last month (from the week ending March 4 to the week ending April 8).
Though PAP has been in power continuously since 1959, many believe that this year's election will be a watershed for the party, especially as this election is the first for Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong.
Websites belonging to the other major political parties have also experienced increases in traffic recently, but none as sharp as the surge in visits to PAP sites. Though visits to the website of the Worker's Party (www.wp.org.sg) increased by 144% between the week ending March 4 and the week ending April 8, overall the site has seen a decline in traffic since its spike in the week ending January 28 - where the site outranked PAP at #4 in the Politics category with an impressive 4.03% market share. Similarly, the website of the Singapore People's Party (www.spp.org.sg) has seen only a modest increase in visits since the beginning of the year, with market share increasing from 0.41% in the week ending January 7, to 0.99% in the week ending April 8.

Though Lau ultimately missed out on the award, which went to Tony Leung Ka Fai for his film 'Election', his website nevertheless experienced a tremendous boost in traffic: it jumped to #7 in the Entertainment - Personalities category on April 8, with a market share of 3.23%, an increase of almost 300% from its 0.83% market share figure on April 1.
