Yahoo! scores in Singapore as World Cup kicks off

World Cup fever has hit Singapore this month, with a host of soccer sites soaring up the Hitwise rankings during June.

As the first match in the hugely popular tournament kicked off on June 10, sites in the Hitwise Soccer category experienced a tremendous surge in traffic. The category's market share jumped from 1.6% of traffic to all sites on June 9 to 2.4% on June 10, an increase of more than 50%.

Yahoo!'s World Cup site (
fifaworldcup.yahoo.com) is currently the most popular online destinaton dedicated to the tournament in Singapore. The site claimed 6.6% of soccer-related traffic for the week ending June 10 and ranked #2 in the Soccer category (behind ESPN Soccernet at #1). The portal's Asia-specific World Cup site (asia.worldcup.yahoo.com) is also performing strongly, holding just over 2% of soccer related traffic and ranking at #7 over this same period.

Hot on Yahoo!'s heels is the World Cup site from ZaoBao, which jumped 19 places in the Soccer category for the week ending June 10 to hold 1.3% of traffic, making it the third most popular World Cup site in Singapore.

Online searches for the term 'world cup' have also spiked this month, rising by more than 500% since the tournament began. Searches for 'world cup' made up only 0.006% of all searches by Singaporeans for the week ending June 3, a figure which had jumped to 0.04% by the week ending June 24.

One of the fastest-moving sites on Hitwise this month is the official website of sports brand Puma (www.puma.com).

As the biggest sponsors of the 2006 World Cup in Germany - supplying on-field, sideline, training and representation apparel as well as equipment to 11 national teams - Puma has gained a lot of attention in recent days. The Puma website also includes its own World Cup sub-site, with details on the company's World Cup-themed apparel and news updates on the tournament.

A rush of visitors to www.puma.com saw the site's rank increase by almost 12,000 places in the first week of June - from #18,461 in all categories for the week ending June 3, to #6,571 for the week ending June 10.

The site also boosted its position in the sports retail sector, with its rank jumping from #37 to #12 in the Hitwise Shopping & Classifieds - Sports & Fitness category from June 3 to June 10.
