| Online retail sector booming as Christmas season fast approaches |
Online retailers should expect a bumper year for Christmas sales in 2006, according to the latest data from the Hitwise Shopping & Classifieds category.
As consumer confidence in the online shopping experience continues to grow worldwide, more and more Internet users are turning to the web for their holiday shopping. During the Christmas 2005 period, traffic share for the Shopping & Classifieds category peaked at 3.85%, and the latest data strongly indicates that this figure will be surpassed for Christmas 2006.
No prizes for guessing what young Singaporean girls want for Christmas this year: Hitwise Search Terms data for the online retail industry reveal that the term 'barbie' is the 11th most searched-for term resulting in a visit to an online shopping website for 24 rolling weeks ending September 23, 2006 and is the most popular toy-related search term in Singapore. The overall highest-ranked search term for the online retail sector continues to be 'ebay', which counts for more than 1% of all searches for retail sites.

"How does my website compare to other websites in my industry?"
While most organizations have a comprehensive understanding of how their customers interact with their own website, few have an overview of how their online business compares to their industry.
Although 'website centric' information is crucial for online marketers, equally important is being able to benchmark your own website against other players in your industry. By doing so, your online business can be put into context and marketers have the opportunity to learn from industry best practices.
Because we measure the online behavior of millions of Internet users every day, only Hitwise can provide marketers with a comprehensive overview of the online competitive environment, enabling marketers to benchmark their performance against competitors.
For example if an online bookstore wanted to benchmark their online performance against their three key competitors, here are some of the insights they could uncover with Hitwise.
- How does my website rank against competitors in the Shopping-Books Industry, and against all websites?
- How much time do people spend on my website versus competitive websites?
- Which search engines drive traffic to my website versus competitive websites?
- What are the differences between the profile of my online audience, and my competitors’ online audience?
- What are the differences between the search terms I use to drive traffic to my website, versus the terms my competitors use?
