Stocks and Shares Dominate Online Business Activity in Singapore
According to Hitwise, the world's leading online competitive intelligence service, researching stocks and shares and online trading are the most popular forms of business activity online by Singapore Internet users. The Hitwise Stocks and Shares sub-category accounted for 30.32% of visits to Business and Finance websites, ahead of Banks and Financial Institutions, which accounted for 24.64% for the week ending 10 February 2007.

Visits to Stocks and Shares websites spiked by 46% comparing weeks ending 6 January 2007 and 10 February 2007. The Phillips Online Electronic Mart System (www.poems.com.sg), or POEMS, which offers online trading as well as business services, maintained its dominance in the category with 20.39%, and overtook DBS Bank (www.dbs.com) during the week ending 13 January 2007 to become the top website in the Business and Finance parent category.

Other websites to drive growth in the Stocks and Shares category included The Central Depository Limited (www.cdp.com.sg), a subsidiary of the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX), which increased its share by 39%, while the SGX website (www.sgx.com) increased by 5% between the weeks ending 6 January 2007 and 10 February 2007. ShareInvestor (www.shareinvestor.com), which provides live prices from the SGX, similarly increased its market share by 20%.

This follows news on the SGX website that "In the six months ended 31 December 2006, SGX Group registered a record net profit of $156.4 million, a 89.8% increase over the $82.4 million net profit in the first half of FY2006 (1H FY2006)."

Hitwise Clickstream data reveals that Search Engines are the fastest growing source of traffic to Stocks and Shares websites, increasing their contribution by 10% over a 12-month period. Google Singapore (www.google.com.sg) accounted for the majority of search engine referrals, with 4.32% upstream for the week ending 10 February 2007. While search terms to the category were dominated by brand names, top generic search terms included 'currency converter' and 'exchange rate'.

Visits to the Stocks and Shares online industry were dominated by local websites, accounting for 73.9% for the week ending 10 February 2007, while Friday was the busiest day for visits based on a rolling 28-day period.

For example, the most popular search term was 'psi' representing 3.90% of all search terms that delivered users to websites classified by Hitwise in the 'Lifestyle - Environment' industry.
