Facebook Experiences Explosive Growth in Singapore
According to Hitwise Singapore, Friendster was the most visited social networking website amongst Singapore Internet users in July 2008. Although Friendster accounted for 37.51% market share of visits in a custom category of the top 40 leading social networking websites, it was Facebook, ranking a close second with 36.27% of visits that recorded an 8-fold increase in traffic year-on-year.

Friendster and Facebook clearly dominated the online market share of traffic to social networking websites, with Multiply, Xanga and Windows Live Spaces receiving only 5.59%, 4.08% and 3.71% of visits respectively during the same period.

In addition to Facebook's phenomenal growth over the past year, 'facebook' ranked as the 3rd most searched-for term after 'friendster' and 'youtube' during the 24 weeks ending 26/07/2008. User engagement on Facebook is also high, with the average session time at 23 minutes and 34 seconds, compared with the average of 12 minutes and 54 seconds spent on websites in All Categories during the week ending 26/07/2008.

While the popularity of various social networking websites varies widely by market (for example, MySpace dominates heavily in the US), visits to Facebook have surged over the past few months, making it the leading social network in Australia and New Zealand.

In Hong Kong and the UK, Facebook has ranked #1 among Social Networks since November and September 2007 respectively. With the explosive growth experienced over the past year, it could just be a matter of time before Facebook becomes the leader of the pack in Singapore as well.
