Retail websites surpass the Christmas 2004 peak
In August, Hitwise predicted that visits to retail websites would peak in the week ending 3rd December 2005, and with 2 weeks to go until the projected peak, Hitwise can confirm that retail sites have already passed last year's high.
At the current rate of growth, online retailers are set to have their best year yet.
Some key insights from the report include:
- The Hitwise Shopping & Classifieds category captured 13.77% of all UK Internet visits for the week ending 19th November 2005, which represents a 14% increase over the same week in 2004.
- UK visits to retail websites have already surpassed last year's peak. For the week ending 19th November, visits to retail websites were 5% higher than the week ending 4th December 2004 - the strongest week for retail visits in 2004.
- Kelkoo UK has been the leader among shopping comparison sites over the past year, measured both in the volume of visits the site sends to retailers and the volume of visits the site attracts. Kelkoo UK sends nearly 4 times more traffic to retailers compared with its closest competitor, Pricerunner.co.uk.
- Shopping.co.uk was a new entrant in August 2004 and has enjoyed significant gains in the share of visits it attracts, increasing 772% year-on-year.
- Google's comparison shopping offering, Froogle UK, has also enjoyed healthy growth since its launch last October. The share of upstream visits that Froogle UK sends to retailers has increased 8 times comparing the weeks ending 12th November 2005 and 13th November 2004.
- Appliances and Electronics, Department Stores, and Computers are the top downstream categories from shopping comparison sites. Different comparison shopping sites show different strengths.

Fans desperate to get hold of advance Robbie Williams' tickets catapulted his newly launched site to the top of the Music - Bands and Artists chart this month. Subscribers of Robbie Williams' fan club - the "Inner Sanctum" - were able to buy advance tickets for the September 2006 dates on Wednesday 9th November, before tickets went on general sale on Saturday 19th November. However, demand for the site was so heavy that it couldn't cope with the heavy volume of traffic, with visits to the site tripling from the previous day.
When general release tickets for Robbie Williams went on sale on 19th November, Ticketmaster became the 10th most visited retail website in the UK for that week. The term 'robbie williams tickets' was also the top non-Ticketmaster search term sending visits to the Ticketmaster website for the week ending 19th November.
News In Brief
Christmas rush for the latest mobile handsets
Up to a third of all new phone purchases are made in the run-up to Christmas, and mobile operators are busy ramping up activity during this critical sales period.
Hitwise Search Intelligence reveals that 'samsung d600' is currently the most popular model, with Motorola V3 and Nokia N70 in second and third position. Although all three models have an integrated MP3 music player, they are essentially camera phones - both the Samsung D600 and Nokia N70 have a 2-megapixel camera - indicating that this particular feature is the one consumers are most interested in.
Despite recent research which suggests that young people will spend an average of £4,000 downloading ringtones over the next 15 years, Hitwise Search Intelligence indicates that the popularity of ringtones may well be past its peak - with searches down by 38% year-on-year since November 2004.
Can Hitwise predict the X Factor winner?
Shayne Ward continues to be the most searched-for of the remaining X Factor finalists online - backing the bookies who confirm him as the strong favourite to win the series.
For the 4 weeks ending 19th November, Ward was the most searched-for contestant, ahead of Journey South in second position, and The Conway Sisters in third place. Ward, emerged as the early favourite and since the start of the live shows, has continued to be the most popular of the finalists - currently receiving double the amount of search queries than the second-favourite act online, Journey South. Bets are being placed in earnest as to who will win this year's final, and Paddy Power (www.paddypower.com) - which has a direct link from the X Factor website - is one of the top 10 most visited downstream sites, receiving 3.74% of traffic from the X Factor website for the week ending 19th November.
Potter conjures up more magic online
In the 4 weeks leading up to the release of the highly anticipated fourth Harry Potter film on November 18th, ‘Harry Potter’ became the most searched-for movie term in the UK.
With “Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire” taking £14.9m in its opening weekend and breaking all box-office records, it appears that the Potter spell is yet to fade - and in the run-up to the film’s UK release, searches for ‘Harry Potter’ more than doubled.
The official website for Harry Potter (harrypotter.warnerbros.com) received more than 60% of these searches, and became the 4th most visited Entertainment – Movies website in the UK for the week ending 19th November.
