The top 50 UK retail and travel websites

The IMRG-HITWISE HOT SHOPS LIST provides a unique insight into the top 50 UK e-retailers. The fifteenth edition, based on October rankings, has seen a number of websites grow in the lead up to Christmas.

The leading three brands retain their dominance within the UK online shopping scene, with Amazon.co.uk (1), Argos (2), and Play.com (3) all keeping their regular positions. Marks & Spencer (5) climbed one place, however Amazon.com (6) fell one place for the second time running. Next (8) also dropped 4 places. New entrants to the top 10 this quarter were Apple Computer (4), John Lewis (9) and Tesco Direct (10).

6 Amazon.com www.amazon.com
7 Tesco.com www.tesco.com

9 John Lewis www.johnlewis.com
10 Tesco Direct direct.tesco.com

Some of the biggest movers this quarter were GAME (22), Boots (28), Sainsbury's (29) and ASDA Direct. There were no new entrants to the list this quarter but Toys 'R' Us - UK (47), Carphone Warehouse (50) and HP (41) all re-entered the Top 50 after an absence of just one quarter.

IMRG's CEO, James Roper, comments:
With the Christmas run-up under way, it is interesting to note how brands' positions compare with previous years. Overall there is not too much change - twenty-seven of the fifty are within four places of their Hot Shops List rankings in October 2008, and five of the top ten have not moved at all: Amazon.co.uk, Argos, Play.com, Marks & Spencer and Amazon.com. John Lewis at 9 is particularly strong, up from 13 last October, 17 in 2007 and 20 the year before that. ASOS continues to power ahead, ranking 11, up from 29 in October 2007, while New Look, at 18 has soared 28 places.

Experian Hitwise's Director of Research, Robin Goad, comments:
As we approach Christmas, retailers from sectors that traditionally do well at this time of year have improved their positions on the list. Department stores such as Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and the supermarket properties have all moved up the rankings. Two highly anticipated new product releases - Microsoft Windows 7 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - led to an increase in demand for software, computers, video games and consoles, helping both electronics and entertainment retailers pick up more visitors this quarter.

From October 2009 to November 2009, the site climbed 10,104 rankings to #5,057 amongst all websites. Compared to November 2008, traffic to the site has also increased by 18%.

News In Brief

Apple iPhone and iPod Touch the most searched for products this Christmas

Visits to consumer electronics websites increased by 16.5% between October 2009 and November 2009 - as the gift buying season started in earnest. This was the largest month-on-month increase in UK Internet traffic to consumer electronics websites this year. Searches for toys and hobbies reached their peak during the w/e 05/12/09, when they accounted for 13.6% of all online searches for products in the UK.

The Apple iPhone is currently the most searched for product in the UK, picking up 1.75% of all product searches and 14.01% of all mobile phone searches during the w/e 05/12/09. The second most searched for product was the Apple iPod Touch (1.29%) and the Apple iPod Nano was #9 (0.5%).

Microsoft seems to be winning the battle of the game consoles, with the Xbox 360 the third most searched for product (1.24%), above the Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation 3, and Nintendo DS. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the most searched for video game (0.70%) following its launch in November.

GHD hair straightners made it onto the list in seventh position after a 31.6% increase in searches, beating the Babyliss For Men Easycut to be the most searched for grooming product for Christmas. Zhu Zhu's Go Go Hamsters was the most searched for toy and the tenth most popular product overall, picking up 0.45% of all product searches last week.

Cyber Monday

'Cyber Monday' December 7 and Sunday December 6 were the joint busiest days for online retailers so far this year. The pre-Christmas peak in visits to online retailers has moved one week closer to Christmas this year compared to 2008, when the busiest day for online retailers was Sunday November 30.

Many industry observers consider 'Cyber Monday' to be the busiest day of the year for online retailers, however the Sunday before is just as important in terms of Internet visits. Many consumers spend time browsing and comparing products and prices on the Sunday, before making their actual purchases on Cyber Monday itself. Bargain hunting will almost certainly have played a role this year, with many consumers leaving it later to order in the hope of finding better deals.

Department stores and supermarkets have been the biggest beneficiaries, making up the majority of the top 10 websites. Amazon UK had the largest increase in visitors between the two dates, and was joined in the top 10 by high street names including Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and Littlewoods. The closer it gets to Christmas, consumers find a preference for multiple delivery and dispatch options, which High Street stores are able to provide. For retailers to win trust at this time of year they must provide customers with both flexibility and security in this area.
