Christmas Related Searches Begin Before Halloween Decorations Come Down
While it seems that retailers begin marketing the holidays earlier and earlier each year, it appears that consumers have taken note and began planning for the holiday season as early as September.
The share of US Internet searches on the term "christmas" was up 41 percent for the week ending November 5, 2005 versus the prior week (week ending October 29, 2005). Additionally, the terms "christmas gift ideas", "christmas gifts" and "christmas decorations" were up 185 percent, 92 percent and 75 percent respectively for the same time period.
"The fact that Christmas-related search queries begin ramping up in September demonstrates the length of the online researching and buying process," said Bill Tancer, General Manager of Global Research at Hitwise. "A similar pattern was noted when Halloween-related queries began increasing in mid-August. Clearly online shoppers have become accustomed to longer lead times and use the Internet to plan out their holiday activities."
iPod continues to dominate product searches
What products are consumers searching for in the months leading up to the holidays? Analysis of Hitwise industry search terms reveal that of the top 10 product search terms, Apple's iPod dominates, with "ipod" being the most popular product search term. Variations of "ipod", such as "ipod mini", "ipod nano" and "ipods" take three additional slots in the top 10 product searches. Other popular product searches include "dell computers", "barbie", "xbox 360" and "build a bear".
In October, visits to the Hitwise Online Retail Index, a collection of 100 top online retail domains in the Hitwise Shopping & Classifieds category, was up an average of 7 percent when comparing year-on-year daily data for October 2005 versus October 2004. In 2004, visits to the Hitwise Online Retail Index increased by 64 percent between the week ending October 30 and the week ending November 27, 2004. Based on the similarity in traffic patterns between 2004 and 2005, it can be expected that visits to online shopping sites will accelerate as the season progresses.
"As we can see when examining visits to the Online Retail Index from 2004 to 2005, the pattern between the two periods is very similar" said Bill Tancer, General Manager of Global Research at Hitwise. "This similarity, which also occurred when comparing 2004 data to 2003, provides us with the ability to predict timing and magnitude of visits to online retailers for the 2005 holiday season."
Searches For ‘bird flu’ Increase by more than 450%
CDC and News sites receive interest
With the outbreak of the bird flu in Southeast Asia and Europe, the possibility that the virus will spread to the U.S. has increased. The threat of a pandemic has generated huge desire for more information on the situation among the U.S. population and President George W. Bush has announced efforts to confront the disease.
U.S. searches for "bird flu" surged 466 percent during the week ending Oct. 15, 2005 versus two weeks prior (week ending Oct. 1, 2005), indicating heightened research on the virus. Another site which has seen increases in traffic as a direct result of the outbreak is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website (www.cdc.gov), which hosts the latest information regarding the virus. In the past two weeks prior to Oct. 15, the site's market share of visits has increased by 18 percent.
"If panic surrounding the bird flu continues to spread around the world, Internet searches on "bird flu" and "avian flu" will be an indication of the extent of the concern," said Bill Tancer, General Manager of Global Research at Hitwise. "It will be interesting to see if this concern has any impact on online travel research to Europe and Asia in the coming weeks."
Searches on bird flu terms use varying keywords
Hitwise Search Intelligence data report that U.S. Internet users are using more than 900 search terms in their quest for information searching. The most popular search terms included "bird flu", "avian flu", "bird flu symptoms", "asian bird flu", "avian bird flu" and "bird flu vaccine".
For the four weeks ending Oct. 15, 2005, 23 percent of Internet searches for the term "bird flu" directly resulted in a visit to the CDC site (www.cdc.gov). Other sites to receive visits from this term include news sites like Google News (news.google.com), NPR (www.npr.org) and BBC News (news.bbc.co.uk) as well as the sites Nature.com (www.nature.com) and PRB Pharmaceuticals (www.prbpharmaceuticals.com).

Recipe sites have risen sharply in recent weeks as families prepared online for Thanksgiving celebrations. Hitwise Search Intelligence data reveal the most popular search terms containing the term "recipe" for the 4 weeks ending October 29, 2005. According to Hitwise data, American Girl experienced a 37.9% increase in market share of U.S. Internet visits (week ending Oct. 29, 2005 vs. week ending Oct. 8, 2005) climbing the ranks in the Hitwise Shopping and Classifieds - Toys and Hobbies category from number 13 (week ending Oct. 8, 2005) to number 8 (week ending Oct. 29, 2005). American Girl has overtaken the websites of Lego Worlds (www.lego.com) and KB Toys (www.kbtoys.com).
American Girl fans have been visiting the official site of American Girl (www.americangirl.com) not only to learn more about the American Girl dolls, but also to stay up-to-date on special promotion and events as well as purchasing dolls and its accessories. Hitwise Clickstream data reveal that for the week ending Oct. 29, 2005 American Girl's online store (store.americangirl.com) was the number one site visited after American Girl website, receiving a whopping 60.5 percent of their traffic. For the same week, Google.com drove 11.7 percent of traffic to American Girl website.

Using Hitwise 'Clickstream' data, the food delivery service found that it was losing 15% of its visits to a variety of competitive websites - specifically 10% to Pizza Hut.
