Classifieds Traffic Soars in Recession
U.S. online traffic to Classifieds Web sites increased 84 percent in February 2009 compared with last year, according to a new report from Hitwise. The industry has experienced positive month-to-month growth in share of U.S. visits in all but one month in the past three years. As the state of the U.S. economy has worsened, visits to Classifieds Web sites have continued to climb, up 28 percent from December 2008 to February 2009.

"Consumers have embraced free classifieds as a way to generate income by selling personal items, while others take advantage of the deals available at the fire sales," said Heather Dougherty, Hitwise research director. "Currently the economy is driving the growth among online classifieds, but satisfied buyers may continue to turn to the Web sites when researching purchases."

Leveraging Competitive Intelligence
Find Your Competitors’ New and Returning Visitors
By using Hitwise Clickstream New and Returning Visitors reports, you can determine the proportion of new versus repeat visitors that search engines, your partners and affiliates are sending to you or your competitors. For example, if you are looking to increase your customer base and your competitor is Barnes & Noble, using "New and Returning Visitors," you will discover that 2.18% of visitors to Barnes & Noble came from Facebook for the week ending 04/11/09. Of those, 70.16% were 'New' visitors. This may sound like a small percentage, but given the volume of visitors to the Barnes & Noble and Facebook websites, it's probably a large number of online consumers. Using this information, you can determine that Facebook could be a great website to partner with in order to redirect some of that traffic to your website instead of Barnes & Noble. This insight is invaluable for gaining a competitive edge over your direct competitors.

Hitwise Intelligence Blogs
Top Searches on Hulu.com
April 17, 2009 - Heather Dougherty

YouTube has unveiled several partnerships with studios to expand the selection of TV shows and movies available on the website. With YouTube adding premium content onto their website, this move starts to make them compete more directly with websites like Hulu. The wide variety and quick availability of content on Hulu has made the website become very popular, so we thought it would be interesting to see what people are searching for on Hulu.co to gain a sense of demand for particular shows. The top search taking place on Hulu.com during the week of March 21, 2009 was for the TV show Family Guy.
