Benchmark Your Online Performance
By using Hitwise Rankings reports, you can monitor a website's ranking by visits, pages, or average session time against your industry, for specific time periods. For example, if you are looking to advertise on a media website, using Hitwise Rankings reports you will discover that of all the websites in the Canada Broadcast Media industry, international websites CNN and BBC News attract the highest market share of visitors at 25.56% and 12.97% respectively, while a local station like CTV Toronto attracts 2.03% for the week ending 05/09/09. Using this information, you can determine that media websites foreign to Canada could be better to partner with in order drive more traffic to your website. This data is useful to gauge online market share of traffic.

The Most Popular Television Websites for Women
Using Hitwise Lifestyle, which incorporates MOSAIC® USA, a leading household segmentation system, you can identify the most popular sites in an industry that attract a specific segment. For example, the top three websites in the Hitwise Television category that attracted the largest percentage of women aged 35-54 in the "Suburban Optimists" segment were KCRA.com, A&E Television Network and CSTV for the four weeks ending 05/09/2009. The Suburban Optimists segment consists of diverse, middle-aged couples and families living in older suburban homes, apartments and duplexes situated in coastal states. Members of this group, despite their age, live 'on-the-go' lifestyles. They enjoy going to nightclubs, movies, comedy clubs and billiard halls. They tend to travel for pleasure mostly to domestic destinations, primarily along the Pacific coast. Suburban Optimists residents enjoy watching network dramas, comedies and reality shows like "American Idol," "E.R." and "That '70s Show."

Search Referrals and Organic Traffic Rising
As a companion piece to the post by my colleague Heather Hopkins, I thought it would be interesting to take a step back and look at the overall impact of search upon specific industries. For the majority of categories measured at Hitwise, search is the top source of traffic referrals and the share has increased year-over-year. Overall, search is increasing as a traffic driver. Among the parent categories that received less than 25% of traffic from search in April 2008, all except News & Media received a higher share of search referrals last month. This data suggests that the best growth opportunities for search are among the laggard categories where adoption has been slower as a referral tool.
