Blogs for Mainstream Media, Political and Celebrity Gossip Prove Favourites Among UK Consumers

London, 24th August 2006

Amidst the unmasking of the latest erotic blogger and the blog storm caused by a doctored photo on Reuters, Hitwise, the leading provider of online competitive intelligence, today reveals that the most popular blog websites are from mainstream news sites, and those dishing political and celebrity gossip.

In the week ending 19th August 2006, nearly 1 in every 200 UK internet visits went to a website in the Hitwise Lifestyle – Blogs and Personal Websites category, proof of the increasing dominance of user generated content in the UK. Hitwise is tracking visits to blog websites and not blog readers such as RSS and ATOM feeds.

The most popular blog sites overall are those that allow consumers to create and read personal blogs, such as Windows Live Spaces (spaces.live.com) and MySpace Blog (blog.myspace.com) followed by blogs for the BBC (www.bbc.co.uk/blogs) and the Guardian (blogs.guardian.co.uk and commentisfree.guardian.co.uk).

The most popular blogs created by individuals were Fugufish, Girl with a One-Track Mind and Guido Fawkes in the week to 19th August 2006.

Fugufish.org rose to fame in recent weeks after posting several viral videos, including one of the band OK Go and of David Bowie in The Labyrinth. The site received the majority of its visits from websites in the Hitwise Email Services (38%) and Net Communities and Chat (16%) categories in the week ending 19th August. Despite being the most visited individual blog in the UK, the site ranked 3,031 among all websites last week, up from 16,589 two weeks before.

Girl with a One-Track Mind author Zoe Margolis, who has been writing her blog under the pseudonym Abby Lee, was recently unmasked after several of her posts appeared in the Sunday Times. The media frenzy surrounding her revealed identity and the blog's erotic content led to an eight-fold increase in site visits in the past two weeks. The blog rocketed from a ranking of 133 in the Hitwise Lifestyle - Blogs and Personal Websites category two weeks ago to 17th in the week to 19th August 2006 when it became the second most popular individual blog, based on market share of UK visits.

Little Green Footballs (LGF) and EU Referendum have risen to popularity based on their criticism of doctored photographs and media coverage in the recent conflict in Lebanon. LGF was made famous for revealing that a Reuters photograph of Beirut had been doctored, and saw its market share of visits increase 88% from the week ending 5th August 2006 to 12th August 2006.

“Fugufish, Girl with a One-Track Mind and Little Green Footballs offer examples of blogs that have quickly gained a mass audience”, said Heather Hopkins, Vice President of Research for Hitwise UK. “Whilst the mainstream media can be an important catalyst for growth, links from other blogs, email and social networking sites can also drive growth. This reflects the community around blogging and a maturing of the medium that now can create its own celebrities.”
