LIVE 8 WEBSITE THE 6TH MOST VISITED SITE IN THE UK ON SATURDAY

 

London, 4th July 2005

Hitwise, the world’s leading online competitive intelligence service, today reports that the official Live 8 website was the sixth most-visited site in the UKon Saturday July 2nd. As London’s Hyde Park concert and simultaneous Live 8 events aired around the globe, more than 1 in 100 visits to a website by UK internet users was to www.live8live.com, according to Hitwise data. The site was only outranked by Google UK, eBay UK, Hotmail, MSN UKand Wanadoo.

UKinternet users flocked to the Live 8 website to find out more about the aims of the historic event, as well as to sign the site’s online petition, which was predicted to be the biggest collection of signatures in the history of the internet.

Hitwise click stream data reveals that more than 50% of downstream traffic from the Live 8 site went to Make Poverty History (www.makepovertyhistory.org), propelling the charity site to #23 amongst all sites visited in the UK. Two percent of downstream traffic from the Live 8 site also went to 7 Digital (www.7digital.com), which provided the concert’s official download - a recording of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ performed by Paul McCartney and U2. AOL, where users could view streaming broadcasts of the event, was the 5th most popular downstream site from Live 8.

The sixth most-visited downstream site from www.live8live.combelonged to legendary British band Pink Floyd, who reunited for a historic set at Live 8 after their acrimonious split 24 years ago. Despite performances from some of 2005’s biggest-selling pop acts, including Coldplay and U2, Pink Floyd stole the show both on stage and online, with their website becoming the most popular website belonging to any band or artist on Saturday July 2nd – ahead of Oasis, U2 and Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof.
