Women Believe The Way To A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and

Men Think Flowers Are Best

Los Angeles, CA, Feb. 8, 2013—A survey about Valentine’s Day gift giving conducted by Bizrate Insights, found that most people still believe the way to someone’s heart is through their stomachs.  Chocolates, a thoughtful card, and flowers rank highest for gifts people plan to give, while classic romantic gifts like fragrance and lingerie are lower on the shopping list. The online survey was conducted February 1st-6th with 5,994 people participating through Bizrate Insight’s network of retailers.

When asked “What types of gifts do you plan to buy?” respondents answered as follows:

Who, How Much and Where?

Respondents plan on buying gifts for their spouse or significant other (48.82%) as well as children or grandchildren (20.42%), while 40.97% do not plan to buy Valentine’s gifts at all. Of those planning on purchasing gifts 22.66% plan to spend over $100, with 61.48% spent online rather than in-store.

He Shops, She Shops

Women are most likely to buy food/drink/chocolates or candy (36.94%), followed by apparel (21.06%), and toys or stuffed animals (17.27%). Men are most likely to buy flowers (34.52%), followed by jewelry (23.44%), and food/drink/chocolates or candy (23.07%). Women also plan on buying a card (33.32%), while fewer men intend on adding cards (19.49%).

More men plan on spending over $100 (29.54%), while just 18.18% of women plan on spending that much.

63.95% of men plan on buying some or all of their gifts online, while 60.74% of women will shop online for some or all of their gifts. More than a quarter of men surveyed (25.70%) will wait until the last minute (3 days before or less) to buy their gifts, compared with 17.06% of women.
